You might be a little surprised that I’m not blogging about a math topic today, but the truth is it’s hard to have great math instruction without student engagement. I went on a “field trip” last week to watch a problem solving lesson being modeled in a 3rd grade classroom. While the math was fabulous, I was blown away by her use of cheers and affirmations! She peppered them throughout her lesson, and the kiddos were so engaged! Think these are just for our Kinders and Firsties? No way! I was in a 3rd grade classroom, and she does them 4th and 5th graders as well. When we went into the debriefing session, I actually asked about her source for the affirmations BEFORE asking a math question (yikes!). She pointed us in the direction of Dr. Jean who is, apparently, famous for her cheers. I have three links to share with you.
