I love what our 1st grade team is doing with their math workstations to make them more accessible for their little folks.  Based on Debbie Diller’s ideas of I Can cards and Math Talk cards, they are putting kid-friendly instructions into each workstation box.  In addition, because the kiddos are expected to show their mathematical thinking in their math journals, they put a sample of what the student’s work should look like. A couple of easy additions that really boost the effectiveness of their math workshop process!
