If I ever feel at a loss for something to blog about, I just need to open John Van de Walle’s book, Teaching Student Centered Mathematics. It is such an amazing resource, and I never tire of reading it. So the page I happened to open to today was on the importance of helping kids develop an understanding of how numbers relate to one another. Coincidentally, this is something we’ve been reading about in Kathy Richardson’s new book for Book Study Mondays. In Van de Walle’s words:
“The most common and perhaps most important model for this relationship [relating given numbers to other numbers] is the ten-frame.”
