Looking for a way to weave math into your first-of-the-year activities?  Yes?  I thought so!  Here’s a little activity that reinforces math vocabulary, gets students up and talking to each other, and requires them to read and follow directions.  Because of the math terms used, it’s probably geared for 5th grade, but you could easily adapt the idea for younger grades.

This is great! It also gives you an immediate assessment, right on the first day.

I love this idea! I’m thinking this would be a great way to start noticing attributes of shapes with my first graders.
