I recently stumbled across a great group of math apps for the iPad and iPhone from Motion Math. Many of their apps feature free versions with the option to pay for additional levels. The app that got me hooked was Hungry Fish. It’s incredibly engaging addictive practice for composing and decomposing numbers. The fish wants to eat a target number. The player feeds the fish by combining bubbles containing numbers that make that sum.

Wings is an app for practicing multiplication. What’s cool about this app is that you tilt the iPad to ‘steer’ the bird toward the bigger number. Multiplication is represented in six different forms: rows of dots, clusters of dots, “groups of” dots, a grid, a labelled grid, and symbols (2 x 3).

Finally, check out Zoom, which features an incredible creative interactive number line. Children zoom in and out of portions of the number line, and animals represent the general magnitude of the numbers–from dinosaurs (thousands) to amoebas (thousandths).

Enjoy!
Just downloaded all three…not sure I am brave enough to let my students near my personal iPad, but a girl can dream about the day we have some to use at school! Thanks for the information about the apps.
Hopefully, that day is coming soon, Suzy! 🙂
Those look great!
Can you tell me which grade levels Zoom is best for?
I have used Hungry Fish before. Hungry Guppies is best for my Kindergarten students. I am new to your blog, so I haven’t seen any other posts, so I’ll just throw this out there: Have you seen Marble Math, or Marble Math Jr.? My kids LOVE this!!!!!

Well, Heidi, it’s hard to tell about the grade level on Zoom. It represents number from the thousands to the thousandths, so I think it’s safe to say it might not be Kinder friendly. I downloaded Marble Math, and you’re right about it being fun! Thanks for the hot tip. 🙂
I have used the Hungry Fish app many times! The children just love it!
