I Have/Who Has Addition and Multiplication Models

In this popular whole-class or workstation game, students match a multiplication or addition expression to a model (representation).

Description

The shift from additive thinking to multiplicative thinking is a monumental leap in mathematical understanding. It’s no wonder, then, that both the CCSSM and Texas TEKS stress concrete and pictorial learning and multiple representations in both 2nd and 3rd grade. Students who are rushed to memorize multiplication facts without understanding the underlying concept of multiplication often struggle to apply multiplication in real-life situations. These are the students who add to solve a multiplication word problem. The activities in this unit are designed to help students develop a strong mental image of the meaning of multiplication.

Includes:
• 4 mini-lessons (connecting repeated addition to multiplication, writing multiplication stories, connecting area to multiplication, and representing multiplication on a number line)
• One set of visual (pictorial) cards
• One set of word problem description cards
• One partner game
• Math Talk cards and student instruction cards for all tasks
