Description
Long before students are exposed to the standard algorithm for adding 2-digit numbers, they should have extensive hands-on experience adding numbers with manipulatives (direct modeling). Working with base-ten blocks helps students understand the place value concepts behind regrouping using the standard algorithm. This activity is designed to give scaffolded practice with increasingly larger numbers.
Students can play two different versions of Roll, Build, and Add with either a printed recording sheet or using interactive Google Slides™. The digital version includes an embedded video explaining how to use the resource. Please note that for either version, students will need a die to generate the numbers.
Includes both downloadable print recording sheets as well as digital versions for use with Google Classroom™!

I appreciate your video on the first slide. It is a great way to show the students how to “drag” the manipulatives to the work space. I like the inclusion of the ten frame to assist students in seeing how the ones add up.

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, manipulatives and an emphasis on place value are the keys to understanding!
