I was looking back through my digital archives, and I found this little equivalent fraction game. My 5th graders used to love this game because, well, you get to run in the classroom. Basically, you divide the class into two teams and hand out the cards equally to the two teams and yourself. You, (the teacher) display a fraction card in a pocket chart. Players from each team check their cards to see if they have a card with an equivalent fraction, and then one player from each team rushes to the front to place their card in the pocket chart. The first player to correctly place their card is the “winner” and gets to leave their card in the pocket chart. Oh yeah, you’re gonna want to clear some space for this one.
Of course, the cards can be used for lots of other activities.
- Have kids sort the cards into piles of equivalent fractions
- Take two cards and compare the fractions
- Choose a fraction card and reduce the fraction to simplest form
- Select a fraction card and draw a model of the fraction
- Put a part of the card deck into a center and let the kids play a Memory (Concentration) game with them (be sure you have matching pairs)
